This 8-hour self-paced virtual course is intended to fulfill the theoretical component for the selection, insertion, and maintenance of adult Peripherally Inserted Central Catheters (PICCs).
Objectives:
Upon completion of this course the participant will be able to:
- Define infusion therapy and basic characteristics of intravenous fluids
- Identify relevant peripheral and central venous anatomy and describe basic vessel structure and blood components
- Define the categories and unique characteristics of vascular access devices
- Determine the criteria for vascular access device selection indications/contraindications of each device
- Illustrate the Peripherally Inserted Central Catheter insertion procedure
- Point out possible intra-procedural complications and strategies to mitigate them
- Discuss PICC care and maintenance
- Describe post-procedural and post-procedural complications
- Identify and explain the Standards of Practice
- Discuss proper PICC documentation and policy
